Carlos Eugene Carter, 94, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024, in Whitesboro, Texas.
He was born in Athens, Alabama, on October 3, 1929, to William Philip Carter and Nona Loucile Swanner Carter. Carlos had three younger siblings: Willie Nell, Philip Earl and James Lerman.
The family moved to Texas when he was very young and he attended public schools in Collin County. He graduated from Wylie High School in 1947 and eventually earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree, both in Education, from North Texas State College in Denton.
For 36 years Carlos was a high school principal and math teacher in several Texas public school districts: McKinney, Iredell, Panhandle, Saginaw, Tyler, Whitesboro and Anna. He retired in 1987.
He met Clariece Moore in 1953 while both were students at North Texas. She was attending summer school and he was commuting from McKinney to work on his Master’s.
After a brief courtship they were married in Dallas on February 12, 1954. Through the years they shared a love of teaching as well as camping and hiking in the mountains of Colorado.
They were active members of Baptist churches in the communities where they lived.
For many years they delivered Meals on Wheels in McKinney and Sherman. After 62 years of marriage, Clariece passed away on September 5, 2016.
Carlos later met and married Marie Olinger in Sherman and they enjoyed 6 years of matrimony until her death in April 2024.
Carlos is survived by his sister, Nell Jones of Celina; daughter, Carla Hawkins and husband, Frank of Whitesboro; son, Danny Carter and wife, Holly of Sheridan, Wyoming; and daughter, Janet Hawkins of Whitesboro. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and daughter, Linda Bailey.
There will be a memorial service honoring his life at a future date.
