Harry L. Downs, 76, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on April 11, 2024, after a courageous long battle to regain his strength and health.
He was born on September 18, 1947, in Lewiston, Maine. Harry was predeceased by his father, Warren E. Downs; his mother, Pearl E. Downs; his son, Harry L. Downs, Jr.; and his daughter, Katherine L. Winn. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis K.A. Downs (Alex); his daughter, Lauri Ann Ivers; his son, Patrick T. Downs; his stepdaughter, Alison L. Hurt and her husband, James E. Hurt; his stepson, Larry Allen Hadwin, Jr.; and many grandchildren.
Harry’s kind heart and unwavering willingness to help anyone at any time endeared him to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He never met a stranger, and his gift for conversation made him a cherished presence in the lives of many.
Harry wore many hats during his life. He was a butcher, long haul trucker, cattleman, and for over a decade, he owned and operated a successful meat processing business in Whitesboro, Texas. His customers were not just patrons but loyal friends, drawn to Harry by his winning personality and genuine care for those he served.
Harry’s tenacity and spirit were evident in his determined fight to leave the hospital and return to the life he loved. Though he ultimately lost this battle, his legacy of love, kindness, and community lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed and always loved.
