Diane Gardner

Diane Gardner, born on September 2, 1949, in San Diego, California, passed on Jan. 6, 2024, in Collinsville, Texas. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, courage and compassion that touched the lives of countless individuals.
Diane began her journey as a trailblazer, defying societal norms by entering traditionally male-dominated fields. Her early career saw her as a gold miner at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. She later transitioned to the oilfield and road construction, and during the ‘80s she worked for Carbon County Coal in Hanna, Wyoming, in an era when women were not commonly found in such roles. Diane broke barriers, paving the way for future generations.
Later in life, she pursued higher education, earning a Criminal Justice Degree. This educational achievement marked the beginning of a proud career in social work, where she became a dedicated advocate for victims of family violence. Diane worked tirelessly to protect their rights and create a safer world for those who needed it most.
She was a beloved mother to three strong women: Sally Fisher of Missouri, Shelly Branan of Colorado and Kimberly Halbert of Texas. Her love and devotion extended to her five grandchildren and her 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a great and cherished joy in her life.
Diane had an exceptional ability to create family wherever she went, amassing a chosen family that she loved as dearly as her own blood. Her warm heart and open arms welcomed friends from far and wide. An avid animal lover, her compassion extended to all living creatures, creating a home and life filled with love and warmth.
Diane is preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Ginny Lewis; and sisters, Nancy Lewis and Sherry Gransee. She is survived by her loving daughters; her sister, Linda Wakefield, (Montana); and their families, as well as numerous cherished nieces, nephews and a multitude of chosen family members.
In honoring Diane’s memory, let us celebrate a life well lived, marked by courage, compassion and cherished memories and a lasting profound impact on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
