C’ville kicks off holidays with downtown event

Horse-drawn wagon rides were a new addition to this year’s Collinsville Christmas On the Square event.

The holiday spirit was alive and well in Collinsville Tuesday night as hundreds gathered for the Collinsville Area Chamber of Commerce’s (CACC) annual Christmas On the Square.

The downtown area was decorated with colorful Christmas lights and holiday figures, serving as the perfect setting for the city’s holiday event.

At 6 p.m., CACC Vice President Carrie Lewter kicked off the evening by welcoming the crowd.

Pastor Tar Henderson from Collinsville’s First Baptist Church gave the benediction, and Mayor Derek Kays proceeded with a countdown for lighting the city’s 15-foot tall Christmas tree.
Shortly thereafter, Santa and Mrs, Claus were delivered to the square by a Collinsville fire truck as the song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” played through downtown.

Upon arrival, the guests of honor took their seats in a festive red sleigh and a line of children formed to take turns posing for photos and sharing their Christmas wishes.

Families roamed downtown where local businesses and organizations had booths giving out free treats and activities to children.

At one table, guests could decorate a holiday cookie with icing and sprinkles. At another booth, attendees could create an original Christmas ornament to take home. Many vendors gave out cookies, candy, popcorn punch and cider while others handed out promotional items and goodie bags.

Some of the local stores stayed open late to grant visitors the chance to do some holiday shopping.

Christmas music was provided by a DJ, and children were seen dancing with special guests Elsa and Spiderman, who gave out glow bracelets.

New this year (and a clear crowd favorite) were rides in a horse-drawn wagon, decorated with festive Christmas lights.

Like last year, Ritchie Real Estate held a raffle for a children’s play house and the winner was announced at the end of the night.

The Collinsville United Methodist Church hosted a free chili supper in the Community Building. It has been a long-standing tradition that the Chamber’s downtown Christmas event is held in conjunction with the supper, which takes place the first Tuesday night in December.

Around 15 crock pots lined a buffet table each containing a different homemade chili. From beans to beef to vegetarian, there was something for everyone.
Onions, jalapenos, cheese, crackers and corn chips were available for toppings.

Christmas On the Square lasted until 8 p.m. when vendors finally packed up their tables and the last people in line boarded the wagon ride.
The event is entirely free for all who attend.

Businesses, churches and other organizations donate their supplies, provide free treats and invest their time and resources to offer Christmas on the Square to the community of
Collinsville surrounding areas.

Despite chilly temperatures, it was a beautiful night for a wonderful community gathering, and truly a great way to kick off the holiday season.
