Hayes Primary School (HPS) in Whitesboro opened their doors after hours Tuesday evening for a Family Literacy Fun Night.
From 4:30-6:30 p.m., students in pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade were invited to participate in a night of fun activities that celebrated the world of reading.
Children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten enjoyed age-appropriate activities in the gym while children in 1st and 2nd grades participated in activities in the cafeteria.
Each student was given a punch card and encouraged to go around the room to visit a series of stations. Each station hosted a reading-focused activity led by a teacher.
Once the child completed a station activity, the teacher would punch their card. Once the card had been punched for all stations, the child could turn it in to a table hosted by the
Whitesboro Elementary PTO in exchange for a small snack.
“This is our first year to try this event,” kindergarten teacher Kaly Knight said. “We’re excited to try it out and see how it goes.”
The event saw more than 100 students and their family members come through the doors.
The Family Literacy Fun Night piggy-backed off the Family Night of the HPS Book Fair, which was held on the same night at the same time.
The Family Literacy Fun Night was a way to not only encourage children to become excited about reading, but to also get families engaged in the process of reading with their children.
“I’m happy with the turn-out,” HPS Principal Josh Hammock said. “Our teachers have been working hard to put this event together and I think it was a success.”
