Republicans held firm to their foothold in local elections Tuesday in Grayson County. They also followed suit with the rest of Texas and the country electing Donald Trump the 47th president of the United States.

Republican Shelley Luther defeated Tiffany Drake (D) in Tuesday’s General Election for the Texas House District 62 seat. As of press time, Luther was handily ahead on the vote count 66,959 votes to Drake’s 19,195. District 62 represents Grayson, Fannin, Delta and Franklin counties in the Texas Legislature.

Luther defeated incumbent Reggie Smith in the March Republican Primary. This was the third time she ran for office in North Texas. Luther made national headlines when she was arrested during the pandemic for refusing to follow Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s shutdown order. She is also a proponent of school vouchers.

In Grayson County, Republican John Kermit Hill defeated Brandy Douglas (D) in the race for Grayson County District Attorney. As of press time, Hill had collected 47,258 votes. Douglas had 15,642. Hill unseated the incumbent district attorney, Brett Smith, in the March Republican Primary. Smith stepped down from the position in October on the heels of several other resignations in the office. Hill’s term officially starts in January.

Across the county, Republican Josh Marr defeated Andre Luper (D) in the race for the open Grayson County Precinct 1 seat. Marr will replace former commissioner Jeff Whitmire who is retiring. He won the seat with 75% of the vote.

Several county seats were won by unopposed candidates Tuesday night. Republican Tony Bennie ran unopposed for Grayson County Sheriff. Bruce Stidham was reelected County Tax Assessor Collector with no opponent. Lindsay Wright will be the next Grayson County Commissioner Pct. 3 after no opponent in both the Primary and General Election.

Ginny Hampton won the JP Pct. 1 race, Thomas Carter won the Constable Pct. 1 race, Cody Putman won the Constable Pct. 2 race, Todd Booher was reelected Constable Pct. 3 and William Robert won the Constable Pct. 4 race— all without opponents.

Grayson County District judges Larry Phillips and Jim Fallon both won reelection unopposed as well.

In Congress, Republican Rep. Pat Fallon won re-election to the U.S. House District 4 seat with 68% of the vote against Democrat Simon Cardell. Fallon is a businessman from Frisco.

The 4th Congressional District includes Grayson and Fannin Counties and stretches from the suburbs north and east of Dallas, north to the Red River boundary with Texas and east to the Arkansas state line.

Fallon advanced to the general election after defeating his GOP opponent in the March primary election by more than 60 percentage points.

At the state and federal levels— as of press time, the Associated Press has projected Ted Cruz to defeat challenger Colin Allred to retain his seat in the U.S. Senate and Donald Trump to be reelected to a second term as president of the United States.

Trump picked up 50,468 votes in Grayson County. Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris got 14,754 votes in the county.
