On Saturday, Nov. 9, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is the place to be for educational fun.
The day begins with an Early Bird Guided Walk with Master Naturalist Jack Chiles from 8-9:30 a.m.
On a two-mile journey, participants will view birds and wildlife along Harris Creek Trail, returning to the Visitor Center in time for the Second Saturday program.
At 10 a.m., Blackland Prairie Texas Master Naturalist (BPTMN) Laurie Sheppard will present “Hagerman and YOU: The Healing Power of Nature.”
Many scientists and scholars have focused their research on the health benefits of nature. From lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease to improvements in cognitive function; from pain management to wound healing, a multitude of evidence can easily be found linking time spent in nature with increased health and well-being.
Many of these positive impacts are available to people at the refuge. Come discover opportunities to learn and grow, places to find peace and solitude and activities to strengthen your body and mind.
Then, at 11:30 a.m., the public is invited to the Visitor Center to meet the 2024 September Photo Contest winners and see their beautiful entries.
At 2 p.m., visitors can enjoy a 60- to 90-minute tram tour along Wildlife Drive at the refuge. Enjoy learning about the history of the displaced town of Hagerman while watching for wildlife.
There are lots of stops for birdwatching and photography. Reservations required. Standbys are accepted if space permits. Tours are every Saturday and Sunday.
All of these events are free and open the public. Donations are accepted to support these and other events and programs sponsored by the Friends of Hagerman NWR.
