On Oct. 18, the Cooke County District Attorney’s Office and the Cooke County Attorney’s Office hosted a “Shattered Dreams” event at Callisburg High School. Sacred Heart High School was also in attendance.

Shattered Dreams is a program for junior and senior high school classes that begins with the dramatization of an alcohol-related crash on a high school campus.

The scene unfolds with wrecked cars, “critically injured” students, police, firefighters, funeral hearses and the arrest and booking of a “drunk driver.”

The purpose of this event is to educate high school students on the dangers and consequences of drunk, distracted and reckless driving. Cooke County EMS, Cooke County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Police Department, Callisburg Volunteer Fire Department, Indian Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Department of Public Safety, Judge Carroll Johnson, George J. Carroll and Sons Funeral Home and CareFlite also participated in the event.

The student “victims” were aware of what was to come, but the rest of the student body was not.

Event hosts asked that parents not discuss the upcoming event with their kids so that the students had that initial shock factor.

The event began at 9 a.m. and lasted a couple of hours.
