All little ghosts, goblins, and ghoulies are welcome to attend this year’s annual Trunks & Tailgates with Treats in downtown Whitesboro on Thursday, Oct. 31.

Halloween night, decorated vehicles will fill the parking spaces in front of downtown businesses on Main Street. There, people will give out candy to trunk-or-treaters of all ages. This free activity is coordinated by Mayor David “Happy Dave” Blaylock, who created the event about 10 years ago with friend Paul Perry as a way to do something fun for the kids in the community.

“The event started as a car show, and over time, it evolved into a trunk-or-treat,” Blaylock said. Originally, Blaylock and Perry contacted some friends with old, classic cars to set up their vehicles and give out candy to local trick-or-treaters. The event was a big hit. In the following years, more people wanted to participate, and the event is now comprised of dozens of vehicles.

Next Thursday evening, vehicles will arrive on-site to set up and decorate from 5-6 p.m. Trunk-or-treating will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Awards for three best decorated vehicles will be distributed at 7:45 p.m, followed by a costume contest for trunk-or-treaters. Best costume awards will be presented to contestants in three age categories: 6 and under; 7-12; and 13 and older.

Event attendees are asked to please refrain from arriving early.

“We love that so many people want to come and trunk-or-treat. But when kids are showing up while we’re trying to pull cars into parking spaces, it becomes a safety concern,” Blaylock said.

Trunks & Tailgates with Treats coincides perfectly with the Trunk-or-Treat event held at the First Baptist Church of Whitesboro on Center Street from 6-8 p.m. Families can attend both events and have a fun and safe Halloween experience.
