Pastor Tar Henderson is happy to be returning home to Collinsville where he will serve as pastor for the First Baptist Church.

Born in Sherman and raised in Collinsville, Henderson has spent the past 20 years in New Mexico. For the last eight years, he’s been part of the Baptist Conference of New Mexico and 13 years before that, served as pastor at Gila Valley Baptist Church.

Henderson had his calling to visit the Collinsville First Baptist Church on Aug. 11. The church then held a vote, and his first official day at the church was Sept. 15. It was a big day, both for Henderson and for the church.

First Baptist Church of Collinsville has been without a pastor for the past two years. Before that, Jay Davis served for almost 27 years.

“The parishioners are really excited to have a pastor on-hand,” Henderson said. “Because of the great work my friend Pastor Davis had done, the church was in a really good place. I’m really looking forward to doing some good ministry here.”

The church (who, prior to Covid, had around 250 members and today has around 170 active attendees), provides numerous opportunities for its parishioners each week. Every Sunday, Sunday School meets at 9:45 a.m. and serves people of all ages, from nursery age to senior adults. Worship service begins at 11 a.m.

A women’s bible study is offered every Monday evening and Thursday morning, and Wednesday evenings offer activities for youth and teens with prayer and bible study for adults.
A variety of other ministries are available on any given week.

Pastor Henderson is excited to have moved back home to Collinsville. While he’s familiar with the area and some of the people, he’s looking forward to connecting with the community.

“My wife and I are excited to establish the ministry that God has in store for us,” Henderson said. “We’re ready to share the gospel and connect with the community. It’ll take a little time for us to build our ministry up, but we’re excited to get started.”

The First Baptist Church of Collinsville is community-focused and is always wanting to reach new people. In addition to weekly services and ministries, the church is also preparing for two community events this year.

The annual Fall Festival on Oct. 31 lasts from 6-8 p.m. and sees up to 800 people in attendance. Guests can enjoy a trunk or treat and games for kids and teens.

On Sunday, Dec. 1, Master’s Voice, renowned southern gospel vocal quartet from Oklahoma, will perform a concert at the church at 6 p.m.
