Last Saturday, the GFWC History Club of Whitesboro hosted a food drive for Your Neighbor’s House (YNH) food pantry at Brookshire Bros. grocery store. The drive was able to raise 1,019 pounds of food for needy families in west Grayson County.

Each year, all 50 General Federated Women’s Clubs (GFWC) participate in a National Day of Service (NDS). This year’s NDS spotlighted food insecurity and hunger. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 34 million people in the U.S. are food insecure. Of those, 9 million are children.

In an effort to help neighbors and raise awareness, the Whitesboro chapter partnered with Connie Lloyd, manager of YNH, and Brookshire Bros. to collect food for the pantry.
YNH is a non-profit community food pantry in Whitesboro that provides food assistance to families in the west Grayson County area. Last month, YNH provided food items to 285 families.

Members of the GFWC History Club stood beneath a canopy outside of Brookshire Bros. asking shoppers for food or monetary donations. Inside the store, employees offered baskets of items for folks to purchase which would be donated to the cause. They also passed out flyers and used word of mouth to promote the food drive. As of mid-day, the History Club had raised $300 in donations and several large boxes of food items.

“We ask for a can of food and people bring us a whole buggy,” Lloyd said. “It’s fantastic to see support from the community.”

Sandy Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Whitesboro also accepted donations, ultimately collecting 141 pounds of food. This was split between the GFWC History Club of Whitesboro and the Lake Area Women’s Club in Gordonville.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who has contributed to this food drive,” GFWC History Club of Whitesboro President Donna Parkinson said. “Every donation we receive allows us to help a local family in need.”
