The Pirate defense pitched a second half shutout to give Collinsville(3-0) a 28-14 victory over Callisburg(1-2) on Homecoming Night.  Caelyn Scott and Caleb Monk were named the Homecoming Queen and Homecoming King for Collinsville.

For the third game in a row, Collinsville used an efficient offence while playing tough defense to gain a victory.  The Pirates put up 28 points with a very balanced offense that racked up 289 total yards.

Collinsville got the ball to start the game, but a tipped pass turned interception ended their drive in just two plays, giving Callisburg the ball on the Pirate 34 yard line.  The Wildcats needed just one play to score as Jake Westerfield caught a pass from Quintin Box for a touchdown.  Chris Walker hit the point after attempt and Callisburg led 7-0.

The Pirates wasted little time in answering the Wildcat score as they needed just 4 plays to get on the scoreboard.  A 42 yard pass from Jaxon Jenkins to Chad Davidson gave Collinsville a touchdown, and when Fernando Perez hit the point after, the ballgame was tied at 7 points apiece with over 9 minutes still left to play in the opening period.

The game slowed down a little bit as both teams traded possessions before Callisburg drove the ball deep into Collinsville territory.  A fumble recovery by the Pirates’ Caysen Schafer stopped the Wildcat drive and gave the Pirates the ball on their own 15 yard line.  A quick 5 yard blast by Garrett Trevino moved the ball to the Collinsville 20.  On the next play, Trevino took the handoff and used a bruising block by Ryan Baker to spring untouched for an 80 yard touchdown romp.  Perez again hit the point after and the Pirates were back on top 14-7 with 37 seconds left in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw only 1 successful drive by either team, and that was a Callisburg touchdown on an 8 yard fullback pass from Bowen McAdams to Jace Bower that tied the score at 14-14.

Then, with 1:34 seconds left to play in the first half – on Friday the 13th – one of the banks of lights at the stadium went out, plunging the field into 25% darkness.  A meeting between the head coaches and the officials resulted in calling an early halftime break.  After a slightly extended halftime, the lights came back on and they teams played out the leftover 1 minute and 34 seconds before beginning the “official” third quarter.

In the second half, the Pirate defense stifled the Wildcat offense.  Callisburg quarterback Tripp Hazel faced constant pressure whenever he dropped back to pass.  Collinsville held the Wildcats to 87 total yards of offense and 4 first downs in the second half, while getting two interceptions.

Offensively, the Pirates put the game away with an even mixture of running plays and passing plays.  Late in the third quarter, Davidson added his second receiving touchdown of the night, this time with a 7 yard catch from Jenkins to give the Pirates a 21-14 lead.

Less than 30 seconds into the 4th quarter, Collinsville put the nail in the coffin as Davidson completed the hat trick with his third touchdown catch, a 38 yard strike from Jenkins. Davidson 87 yards on 3 receptions – all 3 went for touchdowns.

On the ground Collinsville was led by Garrett Trevino’s 122 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.  Collinsville’s internet radio station www.piratemountain.com selected Davidson as the offensive player of the game and Trevino as the defensive player of the game with many tackles and several quarterback pressures.

Collinsville next travels east to play the Wolf City Wolves on Friday, Sept. 20.
