Bulldogs nip Ponder 43-42
The Tioga Bulldog football team bounced back after a week one loss to Collinsville and topped Ponder Friday night 43-42 on the road.
The Bulldogs entered the match-up after having lost several key players to injury in Week One.
“We got four great returning linemen from last year, and all four of them are out (due to injury) in the first quarter of last week. We got a starting corner, starting receiver, backup corner (all injured). We’re the walking wounded right now,” Tioga head coach Zack Birdwell said. “But we have numbers and we have guys that truly trusted this and knew at some point their time’s going to be called on. And that’s what we talk about. You don’t ever know when that’s going to be, but if you just trust the process and trust what we’re doing, at some point it’s going to love you back.”
Tioga senior Johnny Dorpinghaus landed a 61-yard touchdown catch with 31 seconds left.
The non-district bout saw four touchdowns and three lead changes in the fourth quarter.
“They did everything we asked. We try to have lots of things we talk about in the off season, so nothing catches us off guard,” Birdwell said. “And I feel like we battled about as much adversity as we could.”
Dorpinghaus totaled seven catches for 177 yards and three TDs, two carries for 59 yards and had a 34-yard pass.
Senior quarterback Rocky Urich went  20-of-35 passing for 350 yards, five touchdowns and an interception.
Senior Austin Norwood had six catches and 120 yards.
Slade Babbitt and Sam Mott each had touchdown catches.
Birdwell said he scheduled up for 3A DI because Ponder reminds him of the Marlin team Tioga lost to in Round Three of the post season last year.
“This game right here was scheduled for one reason, and it was because of the third round last year. I thought they gave us a look. (They have an) unbelievable junior quarterback,” Birdwell. “I thought it would give us a look at Marlin’s quarterback. They have some big guys up front, just like Marlin, and I wanted us to see that. As much as I would like to roll in 4-0 and schedule wins, we were scheduling for the vision, and this is a big one for us.”
Tioga looks to extend to 2-1 on the season as they host Edgewood tonight.
