Last Thursday, Whitesboro resident Keisha Head made an exciting announcement at the second monthly Veteran’s Social at Cook’s Main Stage in downtown Whitesboro.
Head has created an official non-profit organization called Veterans Association of Whitesboro (VAW). To join, people simply fill out a form and (for now) offer a donation for dues.
“I’m really excited to have been able to create this organization,” Head said. “My hope is that we can provide more opportunities and help as many Veterans as possible.”
The VAW board consists of President Keisha Head, Vice-President Justin Head, Secretary Debra Felske, Treasurer Jay Wadsworth and Sergeant at Arms Mike Farmer.
Head has big goals for the VAW, ranging from providing resources to local Veterans to eventually having their own facility where Vets can gather in a social setting.
“We’ve gotten tremendous support from members and businesses in our community,” Head said. “From sponsorships to donations of give-aways and raffle items, it’s exciting to see so many interested in helping our Vets.”
Following Head’s announcement, attendees of the Veteran’s Social enjoyed visiting, light refreshments (cookies provided by Sweet Andi’s and coffee provided by Iron Soldiers Coffee Co.) and played games like dominoes in a casual setting. Not only did this month’s event attract more people, it welcomed a lot of new faces.
“I’m really happy with how these socials are going,” Head said. “Each month gets bigger and better, and we’re able to reach more Vets each time.”
The monthly socials are open to anyone, and guests do not have to become members of the VAW to attend.
To learn more about the VAW, follow them on Facebook, visit their booth at Whitesboro’s Peanut Festival in October, or attend next month’s Veteran’s Social on Sept. 26 from 6-9 p.m. at Cook’s Main Stage. The event is free and all are welcome.
