Friends, family and colleagues gathered at Southmayd’s City Hall last week to celebrate the promotion of local police officer Michael Aguirre to Lieutenant.

Southmayd Police Chief Jeff Laughlin made a presentation before the City Council and those in attendance to celebrate a promotion within the department.

“I’ve been here for a little under two months now,” Laughlin said, “And it didn’t take me long to see the leadership qualities in Michael Aguirre. Officer Aguirre is a great example for this community. He prides himself on professionalism, positivity, respect, integrity, dedication and excellence. He truly cares about this city and the police department he serves, and I look forward to having him as my number two.”

Aguirre, who has served as a Southmayd Police Officer since 2021, began his career in law enforcement in 2011 as a reserve police officer for the City of Collinsville. Throughout his tenure, Aguirre gained experience in a variety of fields of law enforcement, including criminal investigations, drug enforcement and community police. It was during this time he discovered a passion to serve.

With over 2300 hours of law enforcement training, Aguirre has obtained an advanced police officer license through the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement. Through continued education, he was also rewarded with a certificate in Criminal Justice while attending Grayson Community College.

As a Southmayd Police Officer, Aguirre was selected as a Field Training Officer. In addition to his primary assignments, he was a founding member of the newly-established stand-alone police department, with the highest priority being the quality of life of the citizens he served.

“The Southmayd Police Department proudly promotes Michael Aguirre to the rank of Lieutenant,” Laughlin said.

Aguirre’s wife Morgan then had the honor of participating in the pinning ceremony, in which she attached Aguirre’s rank pins to the lapels of his uniform.

“My career in law enforcement in Collinsville and Southmayd is genuine. I truly have a passion to serve and a passion to learn,” Aguirre said. “I believe that the council…has heard my voice over the last three years. They’re the reason why I’m here, why Chief Laughlin is here, and I believe in the direction we are all going. I want to thank everyone and continue to drive this city forward and keep our community safe.”
