Pirates sweep Hornets

It didn’t take long for the No. 1 Collinsville Pirates to dispatch Cooke County rival Muenster. Just 12 innings to be exact. Collinsville (33-2) extended its winning streak to 31 games with a two-game sweep of Muenster last week in the area round of the Class 2A state baseball playoffs at Denton High School. The Pirates won by scores of 9-2 and 11-1, respectively. They face Sam Rayburn in a one-game affair at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Z-Plex in Melissa.

GAME TWO 
COLLINSVILLE 11, MUENSTER 1
Logan Jenkins controlled the game on the mound in Collinsville’s series-clinching 11-1 victory against Muenster last Friday. The game ended in the bottom of the fifth because of the 10-run rule.
Jenkins struck out six batters and gave up just one run on one hit in a complete-game performance. He accomplished the feat on just 73 pitches.
After a scoreless first inning, the Pirates came to life in the bottom of the second. Collinsville used four hits, three errors and a passed ball to plate six runs and take a 6-0 lead that would not be relinquished.
After giving up a run in the top of the third, the Pirates scored three in the bottom of the third to build a 9-1 lead. They used two hit batsmen, a walk, two errors and a wild pitch to score their runs.
Collinsville scored a run each in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth. The score in the fifth ended the game.
Logan Jenkins (2-3, BB, 2B, 4 RBI) and Jaxon Jenkins (2-3, RBI) led the way for the Pirates at the plate. Colin Barnes (1-2, HBP), Landon Carpenter (0-2, BB, RBI), Peyton Davidson (1-2, BB), Reed Patterson (3 BB, SAC) and Garrett Trevino (1-3) also contributed.

GAME ONE
COLLINSVILLE 9, MUENSTER 2
Rylan Newman kept Muenster batters in check during the Pirates’ 9-2 series-opening win over the Hornets last Thursday. Newman went the distance on the mound, striking out 12 and giving up just two runs on six hits.
Collinsville never trailed in the contest. After a scoreless first inning, Davidson hit an RBI triple and Carpenter followed with an RBI single to put their team up 2-0 in the top of the second.
Muenster scored once in the bottom of the first, but got no closer. Jaxon Jenkins drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to make it 3-1.
The score remained the same until the top of the sixth. The Pirates used three singles, two errors, a hit batsman and a double-steal to increase their lead to 8-1.
The Hornets scored again in the bottom of the sixth, but managed to only pull within six, 8-2. Collinsville scored one more run on an error in the top of the seventh.
Davidson (2-3, HBP, 3B, RBI), Patterson (2-3, BB, RBI) and Trevino (2-4) led the Pirates at the plate. Carpenter (1-3, RBI), Newman (1-3, BB, RBI), Jaxon Jenkins (0-2, BB, HBP, RBI) and Logan Jenkins (1-3, BB) also contributed.
