Last Friday, two S&S Middle School teachers were presented with $1,000 each in scholarship money on behalf of the Texas Retired Teacher Foundation (TRTF).

In March, the TRTF awarded 30 First-Year Teacher Scholarships and 30 Classroom Assistance Grants. S&S Middle School science teachers Caitlyn Tynes and Derek Mueller, who are finishing up their first year of teaching, were selected from applicants from across the state to receive money for classroom materials, curriculum, certification fees, conferences, etc.

Members from West Grayson Retired School Personnel Association (RSPA), the local chapter of Texas Retired Teacher Association (TRTA), were joined by the TRTA District 10 President, Gary Schepf, and the District 10 Foundation Chair, Gwen Craig, to make a presentation to the two teachers to celebrate their awards.

The Texas Retired Teachers Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping active and retired school personnel with their financial needs. They designate more than $90,000 per year for public education. Applications are accepted from September through January each year for the First-Year Teacher Scholarship and Classroom Assistance Grants.

TRTF also funds a “Helping Hand” program for public school retirees, as well as a Disaster Relief Fund for public education employees and retirees. Information on these initiatives is available on their website and will be sent out to area schools in September.
