Softball post-season opens
All four local high school softball teams have advanced the first round of the playoffs and opened post season play this week.
The Whitesboro Lady Cats faced the Village Tech Viper Squids (Duncanville) Thursday, April 25 at home.

The S&S Lady Rams clinched the second-place spot in district play and opened the post season against Dallas Life Oak Cliff Thursday night at Denton High School.

The Tioga Lady Bulldogs will face Petrolia in a 2A Region II bi-district series at Ponder.

Several W’boro runners make it to State meet
The Whitesboro Bearcat and Lady Cat track teams advanced several to state after a strong showing over the weekend at the regional meet in Whitehouse.
The Whitesboro boys team tied Gladewater, Sabine and Atlanta for sixth place with 23 points.
The Bearcat 1,600 relay of Maxx Parker, Colt Fagan, Max Hinsley and Karter Sluder advanced to state as the runner-up with a time of 3:22.92.
Sluder also was fourth in the 400.
Collin Phillips finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 143 feet, nine inches and seventh in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 8.75 inches.
Micah Velton finished 14th.
Zander Brannan tied for seventh in the pole vault.
Jack Hinsley was seventh in the 300 hurdles and 13th in the 110 hurdles.
Wyatt Winchester was 11th in the 300 hurdles.
The 800 relay of Winchester, Fagan, Max Hinsley and Brett Donaldson took 12th with a time of 1:31.88.
Gage Brown tied for 13th in the high jump at five feet, eight inches.
The Whitesboro Lady Bearcats placed fourth overall with 52 points.
Olivia Hildebrand won the gold medal in the discus for the third straight year with a throw of 137 feet, seven inches.
She has been the state runner-up the past two years.
She also advanced to state in the shot put for the second time in three years after winning the region title with a throw of 39 feet.
Brylee Weddle made it to state in the 400 with a second-place finish of 57.74 seconds.
Isabel Gabbert advanced to state in the 300 hurdles as the runner-up with a time of 46.54 seconds.
She also tied for eighth in the high jump.
The 1,600 relay of Shelby Riddle, Aubrey Beam, Gabbert and Weddle won the silver medal with a time of 4:03.48.
Jenna Cole placed 15th in the pole vault.
S&S’ Brynn Blevins finished fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.46 seconds.
The Class 3A state meet will be May 2 at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.
Bulldog golfer makes it to State
Tioga golfer Zander Zafar took second place in the Regional Meet last week at Ferris and advanced to State.
He finished with a two-day total of 135.
The Bulldogs finished seventh in the team standings with a two-day total of 661.
Cole Boyd shot a 169 (85-84) for 39th place.
Jeremiah DeLeon shot 173 (82-91) and tied for 43rd.
Austin Norwood totaled 184 (91-93) to place 54th.
Hayden Hilliard shot a 196 (94-102) and tied for 73rd.
Lindsay won the team title with a 614, one stroke ahead of Haskell.
The Class 2A state tournament will be April 29-30 at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
CHS, THS on to State track
The Tioga Bulldog track team will send two to the State meet while Collinsville will send one in the wake of the 2A Region II meet at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium over the weekend.
Tioga’s Kyndall Whitley earned the region title in the long jump at 16 feet, 2.25 inches.
The 400 relay of Justice Babbitt, Whitley, Bella Dennis and Ella Norwood placed third with a time of 49.99 seconds.
The 800 relay of Sydney Reynolds, Dennis, Norwood and Whitley placed fifth.
Taffi Adams finished fifth in the 100 meter dash.
Babbitt was eighth in the 300 hurdles.
Lindsey Byler was ninth in the shot put.
Collinsville’s Addisyn McDonnell was sixth in the discus with a throw of 109 feet, four inches.
Reese Patterson finished 11th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.52 seconds.
The 1,600 relay of Alison Hardwick, Patterson, Ashleigh Ortowski and Jaydee Matlock was ninth.
Tioga’s Sam Mott won the region title in the 400 with a time of 50.13 seconds while Jake David was fourth with a time of 52.07 seconds.
Mott also finished fourth in the 110 hurdles and seventh in the 200.
Austin Norwood took third in the 200.
The 1,600 relay of Justin Arrington, Kyson Kirkland, David and Norwood was fourth with a time of 3:27.82.
Kirkland also finished sixth in the 800.
The 800 relay Arrington, James Culp, Rocky Urich and Jonathan Hernandez was 11th.
Collinsville’s Nick Cox advanced to state in the discus with a silver medal throw of 151 feet, six inches.
The Class 2A state meet is May 3 at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.
Hill out as S&S AD
S&S head football coach and athletic director Jeff Hill announced earlier this week that he has stepped down after two seasons.
Hill is leaving to become the offensive coordinator at Nocona.
The Indians shared the 6-2A (I) title with Tioga and went 8-2 with a bi-district loss to De Leon in 2023.
S&S was Hill’s first head coach job and he finished with a 1-19 record in his two seasons.
The Rams went 0-10 in 2023, were shut out four times and held to single digits seven times.
The Rams have had a losing record every year since 2018 except for a 6-5 finish in 2020.
Along with a new head coach, the Rams are headed into a new district next year.
They will line up against Bells, Gunter, Howe, Blue Ridge, Callisburg and Leonard in 2024 and 2025.
Lady Rams secure second place
The S&S Lady Ram softball secured a second-place seed going into the post season with an 11-5 win over Boyd earlier this week at Denton.
Lily Nunn went 2-for-3 with a home run, walked and drove in four runs.
Hayden Kight went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored twice.
Lana Walters singled, drove in three and scored once.
Hannah Foster singled, walked and drove in a run.
Hayden Mowrey allowed an unearned run on two hits.
She also tripled, walked twice and scored twice.
Tynslie Adcock walked twice and scored twice.
Lady Pirates top Era
The Collinsville Lady Pirate softball team run ruled to end district play with a 17-1 final last week.
Audrey Miller went 3-for-4 with a home run, walked, drove in three and scored twice.
The win locked them into second place in the post season rankings.
Ashleigh Ortowski went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and scored twice.
Shelby Derzapf went 2-for-4 with a double, walked, drove in two and scored twice.
Addisyn McDonnell doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored twice.
Tessa Vannoy singled, walked twice, drove in two and scored once.
Devyn Elvington singled, walked three times, drove in two and scored three times.

Tioga falls to Muenster
The Tioga Lady Bulldog softball team ended district play with a 16-4 loss to Muenster earlier this week.
Kenzie Powers landed a home run, walked and drove in two runs for Tioga.
Channing Hurst went 2-for-2 with a triple, walked and scored twice.
Ainsley Denham singled and drove in two runs.
Taffi Adams singled and scored once.
Pirates win district crown
The Collinsville Pirate baseball team clinched their third straight district championship with a 4-3 win over Whitewright last week on the road.
Logan Jenkins went 2-for-3, walked once, drove in a run, scored once.
He also secured the win on the mound by striking out six and only allowing one hit in two scoreless innings.
Colin Barnes walked, drove in a run and scored once.
Reed Patterson doubled and scored once.
Garrett Trevino allowed two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Era edges Tioga
The Tioga Bulldog baseball team lost to Era 4-3 last week on the road.
Hayden Hilliard went 2-for-2 with a double, walked twice and drove in one run.
Gage Anderson went 2-for-4 and scored twice.
Austin Norwood went 2-for-4 and scored once.
Luke Roberts walked twice.
The loss took Tioga to 6-6 in district play.
Lady Cats thump Pilot Point
The Whitesboro Lady Cat softball team sailed to a 21-0 shutout win Tuesday, April 16 over Pilot Point on the road.
Olivia Hildebrand went 3-for-3, walked, drove in three and scored twice for the Lady Bearcats.
Avery Howerton pitched a perfect game.
She threw six strikeouts. She also went 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and scored four times.
Melanie Baldwin went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, two RBIs and scored three times.
Bradi Gallaway went 3-for-3, walked, drove in four and scored four times.
Addison McBride went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and scored once.
Makayla Wolf doubled, drove in two runs and scored three times.

The S&S Lady Ram softball team advanced to 2-23 on the year with a 10-0 win over Callisburg Tuesday, April 16.
Hayden Kight threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.
She also singled, walked twice drove in a run and scored once.
Hayden Mowrey went 2-for-2 with a home run and walked twice.
Lily Nunn homered, walked three times and drove in two runs.
Lana Walters also had a home run, walked and scored twice.
Bri Fowler went 2-for-4 with a double, drove in a run and scored twice.

The Collinsville Lady Pirates topped the Lindsay Lady Knights 21-11 Tuesday, April 16 to advance to 15-11 on the season.
Haidyn Bryson went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and scored three runs for the Lady Pirates who secured a second-place seed with the win.
Addisyn McDonnell went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and scored once.

Cats fall to Ponder
The Whitesboro Bearcat baseball team dropped to 8-3 in district play Tuesday, April 16 after a 5-4 loss to Ponder.
Dax Martin went 2-for-3, walked and drove in a run for Whitesboro.
A promising Bearcat lead disappeared when Ponder scored four times in the seventh inning to seal the deal.
Brayden Bomar singled, drove in a run and scored twice.
Maxx Parker singled, walked, drove in a run and scored once.
Landon Newkirk walked and drove in one run.
Jacob Knight walked and scored once. The loss took Whitesboro to 7-4 in district play.
