S&S Theatre OAP ends season with 5th-place finish at Area

The season came to an end for S&S High School Theater One Act Play (OAP) students when they placed fifth at the Area competition at Grayson County College in Denison on April 10.
Under the direction of Channon Gibson, S&S performed “It’s All in Your Head,” the story of a young boy who is coping with the struggles of mental illness.

Though S&S did not advance to Regionals, several of Gibson’s students received awards for their outstanding work and dedication. Ashlyn Griffin received All-Star Technician. Kenzie Harmon received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. Savannah Ringger received All-Star Cast. Dylan Vickrey received Best Performer.

“Although the day didn’t end the way we had hoped,” Gibson said, “I am extremely proud of my students. The challenges they faced this year could have stopped us at District, however, my students were able to move past that. In my eyes they succeeded. We gave our audience a message about the struggles of mental health. That alone is hard for a student to accomplish. We proved at Area that we have amazing actors that were able to take a story and have an audience feel for them. My favorite part was hearing some audience members hum our song, that was written by our very own Lexis Belcher, as they walked out of the show.”

The schools that advanced to Regionals are UME, Gunter and Pottsboro. Regionals will take place on April 25 in Tyler.
