S&S HS One Act Play advances to Area competition

S&S and Whitesboro High Schools’ One Act Play teams both competed at Bi-District competition at North Central Texas College (NCTC) on March 27.

Under the direction of Channon Gibson, S&S students performed “It’s All in Your Head,” a play about a young man who struggles with mental illness.
Whitesboro performed David Lindsey-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize winning play “Rabbit Hole” under the direction of Marylee Carney. The play deals with the struggles of moving on after a tragedy.

S&S advanced to Area One Act Play. The other schools that advanced were Valley View High School and UME Preparatory Academy. Whitesboro was named alternate.
Four students from Whitesboro received awards for their outstanding work in the production. Ava Mitchell received the All-Star Tech Award. Dorothy Valentine received the award for Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. The All-Star Cast Award went to Jackson Harper. Emily Cogburn received the award for Best Performer.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of this cast and crew,” Carney said. “They have worked incredibly hard, overcome countless obstacles, and put on an amazing show of both laughter and tears, but mostly heart. They are a wonderful group of young people, and I am extremely proud of them, and the work they did on this show.”

Students from S&S also received awards for their outstanding hard work and performances. Lauren Schovan received the award for All-Star Technician. Savannah Ringger received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. Alyssa Kennedy and Dylan Vickrey were awarded All-Star Cast.

“I’m incredibly proud of my students and all of the hard work they have put into this show,” Gibson said. “They have brought my vision to life. Getting to present this story to an audience has been a blessing.

“The accolades are wonderful but knowing that my students are bringing light to the struggles of mental health makes what we do so important. They truly bring life to a story that needs to be told. I am one proud director.”

Area One Act Play competition will take place at Grayson College in Denison on April 10.
