Shelley Luther

The unofficial results are in and some key offices in Grayson will change hands in the wake of Tuesday’s GOP Primary Election.

Notably, incumbent Grayson County Criminal District Attorney Brett Smith lost his primary bid to challenger John Kermit Hill by a margin of 2%. Hill received 10,452 votes. Smith got 9,863, so Hill is off to the November General Election and the office will change hands in January.

“I appreciate our supporters,” Smith said. “And all of the people of Grayson County. It has been the best 21 years of my life, working as a prosecutor for the folks of Grayson County.”
Smith has been the elected DA since 2018.

For the State House, Incumbent State Representative District 62 Reggie Smith has been ousted after four terms. Smith was bested by primary opponent Shelley Luther who picked up 16,956 votes throughout the district. Smith garnered 14,774. Of those, 11,264 people in Grayson County voted for Luther and 10,392 for Smith.

The State Senator District 30 race is headed to a run-off between Jace Yarbrough and Brent Hagenbuch after neither opponent won 50 percent of the vote.

Locally, Incumbent Constable Precinct 3 Todd Booher fended off challenger Scott Taylor by a wide margin. Booher received 1,963 votes while Taylor received 1,361 votes.
With no Democrat in the race, Booher will be sworn into his sixth term in office in January.

Incumbent Grayson County Republican Party Chair Rick Staples, of Tioga, lost his seat in a landslide to challenger Brent Lawson. Lawson amassed 13,025 votes compared to Rick Staples’ 4,071.

On the national front, Grayson County Republicans sided with the rest of the state in handily backing Donald Trump for the president and Ted Cruz for reelection to the Senate.
