The Feb. 19 meeting of the GFWC History Club of Whitesboro focused on Arts and Culture and featured guest speaker Cynthia Harris, local artist and previous retail owner.
A graduate of Whitesboro High School and the University of North Texas, Harris began her career as an English and art teacher before opening retail store Sunny Paige (now under the ownership of John and Mandy Sanders). She has recently begun selling her art to retailers.
Harris provided all the supplies for Monday’s meeting, including canvases, paints and brushes. She led attendees through spring-subject paintings (tulips, roses, bunnies, etc.) and brought some of her own artwork to display and sell. She also donated two of her paintings (over $150 value) to the History Club’s silent auction to be held in April.
In honor of Heart Health Month, everyone was asked to wear red. Meeting attendees enjoyed a meal of beef stew, corn bread and apple dumplings, and the business meeting commenced. The club updated its bylaws and voted on a slate of officers who will be installed at the end of the organization’s May business meeting. The newly-elected GFWC History Club officers include Donna Parkinson, president; Keisha Head, president-elect; Betty Capehart, 1st vice-president; and Carla Woolsey, 2nd vice-president.
Also at this meeting, the women confirmed plans for upcoming events.
The Whitesboro Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) annual Shauney P. Lucas Community Art Show is scheduled for March 8-10 and will be held at the Jimmie O. Rector Community Center. This year’s featured artist is Rob Jordan, and free viewing times will be Friday, March 8 from 7-8:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m.-5p.m. and Sunday, March 10 from noon-5 p.m. The History Club will co-host a Meet the Artists reception Friday night from 7-8:30 p.m. with light refreshments. All are invited to attend.
The club will hold its Spring Social and Fashion Show again on March 3 from 2-4 p.m. at Ranch 82. Benefiting graduating senior girls, this fundraiser features young men and women from the area who will model various outfits from select local boutiques while attendees enjoy refreshments. It’s a fun way to learn more about the shops in the Whitesboro area while raising scholarships for graduating seniors.
The GFWC History Club, a chapter of the Trinity District, will host the district’s spring convention in Whitesboro this spring. The district will host the state convention in McKinney. Local members are encouraged to attend.
