The Jan. 22 meeting of the S&S CISD board of trustees began with special recognition.
Texas VFW Post 2772 Auxilliary Commander Alan McAdams and Vice President Jim Robbins presented awards to the Teacher of the Year, S&S Middle School teacher Jeremy Lyons, and Patriot’s Pen of the Year, 8th grade student Minh Khang Vo Phan.
The teaching award celebrates teachers who promote patriotism while the student’s award was given for the best essay about what freedom means.
The meeting continued with a Texas Academic Performance Report presented by Director of Student Services Lance Johnson.
Counselor Bambi Pelzel presented “Play it Safe!” a child abuse awareness and prevention program. “Play it Safe!” consists of age-appropriate scripts and videos to help children learn how to recognize abusive behavior. It provides tools for children to respond to threatening situations and encourages them to report abuse to a trusted adult.
School Board Vice President Brittany Bennett made a motion to approve a donation to FCCLA in the amount of $202 from Donna Landy. The motion passed unanimously.
School Board member Sean Turner made a motion to approve hiring Shirley Grantham as a high school teacher. The vote was unopposed and the motion carried.
The board entered closed session at 7:41 p.m. and reconvened at 9:08 p.m. At that time, Superintendent Jeff Russell gave a report in which he announced the resignation of Kristi Turner, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher at the high school and the girls’ track coach.
