The Friends of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) are holding their monthly bird watching event on Feb. 3 at 6:45 a.m. Known as the Little Sit, this event is an opportunity to learn how to identify the birds of North Texas.
Each month, a group of dedicated birders meet at the end of Pad H on the west side of Hagerman NWR. An expert bird identifier is present and keeps track of the number of each species of birds observed and enters the data into eBird, an online database of bird observations providing scientists, researchers and amateur naturalists with real-time data about bird distribution and abundance.
The Little Sit meets the first Saturday of each month 30 minutes before sunrise to watch the birds come into the water and begin to feed. The event lasts about 2-3 hours, but the public is welcome to attend all or part of the Little Sit.
For more information, a map to Pad H and to register to receive event updates, please register at www.FriendsOfHagerman.com/LittleSit or email [email protected]. The event is free and open to the public, funded by donations.
Hagerman NWR thrives with the help of volunteers. The refuge is currently seeking Visitor Center Greeters to meet and greet people from all over the world while giving out information about the refuge and wildlife, handing out maps and making sales in the Nature Nook.
If you enjoy digging in the garden and learning about native plants, you might be interested in assisting Master Naturalists and Gardeners in maintaining the refuge Butterfly Garden. The refuge Outdoor Crew also needs help sprucing up hiking trails, trimming and removing brush and general cleanup. This group meets the first Tuesday and fourth Saturday of every month.
