For the first time, Whitesboro elementary-level students swept their UIL competition.
In December, Whitesboro Primary and Intermediate School students competed in several catergories at UIL in Callisburg.
They earned 1st place overall in the district. All 19 teams placed, with 14 1st-place teams, three 2nd-place teams and two 3rd-place teams.
Twelve of 27 events had every participant place, including alternates earning Best Alternate.
There were 15 2nd grade medalists, 18 3rd grade medalists, 26 4th grade medalists and 32 5th grade medalists.
In second grade Chess, Elam Knight placed 4th and Levi Hoskins placed 5th. The team placed 3rd overall. In Creative Writing, Coraline Edwards placed 6th, Yahir Arteaga placed 2nd and John Holle placed 5th.
In Music Memory, Knight placed 3rd and received a perfect score, Penelope Howell placed 4th and received a perfect score, Edwards placed 1st and earned a perfect score. John Holle received Best Alternate, Ariana Aguirre placed 2nd and earned a perfect score and Mia Willis placed 4th with a perfect score. The team was 1st place overall.
In Storytelling, Blakley Mitcheson placed 2nd, Bree Shopbell placed 1st, Samantha Renteria earned Best Alternate and Aguirre placed 6th.
Third graders also earned several honors. For Chess, A’iden Thomason placed 3rd, Caitlyn McClendon placed 1st and Luke Beckett placed 6th. The team placed 1st overall.
In Music Memory, Maxwell Schultz placed 5th, Mason Schultz earned Best Alternate, Alex Arteaga placed 3rd and Owen Hobbs placed 1st with a perfect score. Talon Cohorn placed 3rd and Teigen Clark placed 2nd. The team placed 1st overall.
In Ready Writing, Emma Miles placed 2nd. In Spelling, Miles placed 1st, Madison Glenn placed 4th, Lily wright placed 3rd and Molly Baggett was named Best Alternate. The Spelling team placed 1st overall.
In Storytelling, Beckett was named Best Alternate, Adlie Eggenberg placed 4th, Alexa Glenn placed 1st and Tristan Lane placed 2nd.
Representing fourth grade, in Art, June Aycox placed 2nd, Mara Coello was Best Alternate and Gunnar McCray placed 1st. The team placed 1st overall.
In Chess, Caleb Key placed 1st, Adaline Hathaway placed 5th and Kaylor Sandmann was Best Alternate. The team placed 1st overall.
In Music Memory, Luke Pollard placed 1st, Addison Crabtree placed 4th, Lincoln Idleman placed 3rd and Key placed 5th. Lincoln Carey was named Best Alternate and Shelby Watson placed 2nd. The team placed 1st overall.
In Number Sense, Lanen Porter was Best Alternate, Pollard placed 1st, Steel McCool placed 6th and Fenway Murray placed 3rd. The team placed 1st overall.
In Oral Reading, Amelia Cargile was named Best Alternate, Kaelynn Harper placed 5th and Hadley Jones placed 3rd.
In Ready Writing, Nova Blevins was named Best Alternate, Brynlee Johnson placed 2nd and Adelyn Dishman placed 1st. In Spelling, Kaylee Reed placed 6th, Johnson placed 4th, Alizabeth Hollandsworth was named Best Alternate and Stella Baker placed 3rd. The team placed 1st overall.
Competing in fifth grade Art, Caslyn Gamble placed 4th. The team placed 3rd overall.
In Chess, Sydney Niles was named Best Alternate, Gamble placed 4th, Bentleigh Burkleo placed 5th and Slade Gartin placed 2nd. The team placed 1st overall.
In Dictionary Skills, Gamble placed 4th and Lyla Roberson placed 1st. The team placed 1st overall. In Listening, June Medina placed 2nd. The team placed 2nd overall.
In Maps, Graphs and Charts, Gamble placed 1st, McKenzie Hutton placed 2nd, Georgia Maxwell placed 4th and Burkleo was named Best Alternate. The team placed 1st overall.
In Music Memory, Jude Wisener placed 1st, Niles placed 4th, Gamble placed 2nd, Nick Snow placed 5th and Harper Everett was named Best Alternate. The team placed 1st overall.
In Number Sense, Gamble placed 4th, Graham Hendry placed 5th and Niles placed 6th. In Oral Reading, Kelby Latta placed 3rd, Niles placed 4th and Sophia Ward placed 6th. The team placed 2nd overall.
In Ready Writing, Gael Arreguin was Best Alternate, Niles placed 6th and Roberson placed 5th.
In Social Studies, Gabby Baldwin placed 4th, Grayson Percival placed 5th, Latta was named Best Alternate and Brynleigh Holland placed 2nd. The team placed 1st overall.
In Spelling, Roberson placed 4th and Wisener placed 6th. The team placed 2nd overall.
Collinsville Elementary students also competed in several UIL events. The school placed 4th out of seven schools with 225 points (just 14.33 points shy of 3rd place). In addition to a 124-point increase from last year, several teams and individuals achieved top honors.
In second grade, Chase Kays placed 4th in Creative Writing while Austin Patterson placed 6th in Storytelling.
In third grade, Jacob Adkins placed 4th in Music Memory while Salleen Harrison placed 4th in Storytelling.
Fourth graders Kennedy Ferguson placed 2nd in Art; Kenzie Brown placed 1st in Number Sense, 5th in Spelling and 6th in Oral Reading; Kenzie Scott placed 6th in Ready Writing; Lynli Davidson placed 6th in Number Sense and the Number Sense Team (Brown, Davidson and Brady Krueger) placed 2nd overall.
Fifth graders Kandry Ortowski placed 2nd in Art and 2nd in Dictionary Skills; Ryan Carney placed 5th in Chess Puzzle; Mia Walters placed 1st in Dictionary Skills; George Thaden placed 1st in Maps, Graphs and Charts and 2nd in Social Studies; Riley Adkins placed 6th in Music Memory; Samuel Villa placed 1st in Number Sense and 6th in Ready Writing; and Lillian Goodloe placed 2nd in Number Sense and 2nd in Ready Writing.
The fifth grade Chess Puzzle Team (Carney, Jagger Crisp and Hayden Patterson) placed 3rd overall. The fifth grade Dictionary Skills Team (Walters, Ortowski and Taige Johnson) placed 1st overall.
Fifth grade Maps, Graphs and Charts Team (Thaden, Walters and Keeton Gardner) placed 3rd overall. The Number Sense Team (Villa, Goodloe and Eleazar Castorena) placed 1st overall and the Social Studies Team (Thaden, Logan Tompkins and Brody Ward) placed 3rd overall.
