CHS students earn athletic, academic honors

Collinsville ISD experienced several student victories last week.
In addition to three athletes signing letters of intent to play collegiate athletics (full story on page 7), volleyball players Addisyn McDonnell and Shelby Derzapf were named All-State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
“I’ve known Shelby and Addisyn since they were in middle school, so to see them go out their senior year with this honor is awesome!” coach Callie Reed said. “To not only be recognized locally within our district, but to be recognized at a state level -- it attests to the work they’ve put in all these years. I’m very proud to have been able to coach them this year and can’t wait to see what they accomplish going forward.”
The Collinsville UIL Congress Team competed at the State Congress meet last Tuesday and Wednesday. The team was comprised of George Light, Ryan Baker and Sarah Davenport. Davenport advanced to Finals and placed 13th in 2A.
Several CISD Pirates competed at the Princeton Spring Classic Academic UIL Meet last Saturday. Events included Lit Crit, Copy Editing and Speaking Events. Congratulations to Collinsville’s Math and Science teams on placing in several events.
In Number Sense, Cooper McMillan placed 2nd and Fernando Perez placed 3rd. In Calculator, Reese Patterson placed 1st, Noe Cantu placed 3rd, Liam Kee placed 5th and the team placed 1st.
Science teammates Preston Scott placed 3rd and Perez placed 5th. In Mathematics, Davenport placed 2nd, Perez placed 3rd, McMillan placed 4th, Patterson placed 5th and Scott placed 6th. The entire Mathematics team placed 1st.
“Most of the competitors we took on Saturday were freshmen and sophomores and this is their first year to compete in high school meets,” Mathematics coach Raea Davenport said. “I’m extremely proud of the effort they put in to prepare for these meets. I’m also thankful to have students and their parents who find value in the UIL Academic program. Showing up on Saturdays before the sun is up isn’t on most kids’ weekend to-do lists. I don’t take for granted that I have kids that will consistently show up and compete. I’m grateful and happy to be their coach.”
