The Collinsville City Council tabled the appointment of an alderman Monday night and accepted Chase Guidera’s resignation from the board as he prepares a move to the mayoral position in May.
Guidera is currently one year into a two-year term as alderman. He ran unopposed for mayor in the recent election, so his current seat will be vacated when he is sworn in as mayor in May.
Guidera will replace current Mayor Derek Kays who opted to not seek re-election after serving a decade in the position.
Likewise, Alderman Benny McKee did not seek re-election and no one else filed to run for council. The election was canceled and the board will be forced to fill two empty seats in the new term— Guidera’s unexpired term as well as McKee’s.
Guidera’s resignation came at the end of Monday’s regular city council meeting. He will sit out the council until May when he’ll be sworn in as mayor.
By him resigning, the council can now appoint someone to fill his seat and, thereby, be an acting member on the board to vote on McKee’s replacement as well as other council restructuring that leads up to the May transition.
Guidera’s resignation was listed atop the “New Business” portion of the meeting agenda, though it was put off to the end of the meeting.
The council tabled appointing someone to fill Guidera’s seat opting, rather, to fill the vacancy at a special called meeting on April 30.
McKee’s vacancy will then be filled at the May council meeting, according to Mayor Kays.
In other business Monday night, the council:
• Received waste collection service proposals from Republic Services and Frontier Waste Management, though they tabled the acceptance of any bids.
• Approved Ordinance 851-2025 making it legal for residents without access to natural gas to install propane tanks on their property.
• Tabled official action on a pending interlocal agreement with Grayson County Pct. 3 for road repairs at FM 902 and Broadway Street. Though they did approve the scope of work for the project.
The council also spent almost an hour in executive session discussing personnel matters. No action was taken pursuant to executive session.
