News-Record contributor Mackenzie Johnson won First Place, feature writing last week at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention in San Marcos. Johnson and 30 other writers were dropped in downtown San Marcos and given 90 minutes to find a feature story. They then had 60 minutes to write the story. She came back with a profile about a local community center that is now set to publish in the San Marcos Record. Johnson is a senior at Tarleton State University and managing editor of the Texan News Service and J-TAC student newspaper. She has been a contributing writer at the News-Record since January specializing in equine stories. Next week, Johnson will cover the National Reining Breeding Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma writing stories directly for the hosting organization.
