The Whitesboro Masonic Lodge No. 263 has given the Community Builder Award to Larry F. Worthy.
The Community Builder Award was designed to enable a Masonic Lodge to recognize outstanding non-Masons who have distinguished themselves through their service to the community; to local, state or national government; to their Church of Synagogue or to humanity.
Worthy was raised in El Reno, Oklahoma and is a graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He worked as an auditor and investigator for 40 years.
Worthy lived in Whitesboro part-time from 2019 until he moved here full-time in 2022. He retired from his final position as the Executive Director of Asset Protect at the University of North Texas in 2021.
Looking for a way to stay busy and serve the community, he soon started the Methodist Service Group building wheel chair ramps for those in need. He has also been active with the Peanut Festival BBQ lunch at First United Methodist Church in Whitesboro, feeding hungry festival attendees at the biggest annual event in Whitesboro.
Worthy became aware of a program called Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) in 2023. He fell in love with their mission of building beds for kids that do not have beds.
Worthy thought Whitesboro should have a chapter to help and serve the kids in Grayson and Cooke Counties. With the assistance of the FUMC and along with Kevin Brannan and Jason and Alicia Rupert, Worthy got a SHP Chapter for Whitesboro.
Worthy serves as the President of the Whitesboro SHP Chapter. Raising funds and using volunteer labor, the Whitesboro Chapter has built and delivered 168 beds to kids since January 2024.
Worthy is also a Certified Lay Speaker for the United Methodist North Texas Conference.
