As Easter approaches, the community is invited to enjoy “The Musical Journey of Jesus,” a free concert to be held at Trinity Lutheran Church (1515 North Travis Street in Sherman) on Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m.

The performance will tell the life story of Jesus Christ -- a tale of betrayal, judgment, wrath and, finally, hope and light of the world. The concert will consist of nine musical selections ranging from “O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion” from The Messiah by George Frideric Handel to “Es Ist Vollbracht” from St. John’s Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. The performance will include an intermission.

The concert will feature Sherman resident Dr. Barbara Bacik Case on piano and her daughter, mezzo soprano and Whitesboro High School ’94 graduate, Lorna Case.

Dr. Case is a concert pianist, coach, accompanist, teacher, adjudicator, church pianist, organist and chamber music performer. Her background includes a Bachelor of Music in Piano from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music in Piano Performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin.

She was a coach/accompanist at Austin College, has a private piano class and serves as a church pianist/organist. Recently, she collaborated on a scientific paper with noted astronomer Dr. Cliff Cunningham on the newly discovered cantata, “The Seven Sisters,” where she did the musical analysis of this work that is based upon the legend of the Pleiades star cluster. This paper was published in the Journal of Astronomical History & Heritage.

Lorna graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. She was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers and served in the 2nd Engineer Battalion (Combat, Mechanized) in the Republic of South Korea as an Assault Float Bridge Platoon Leader. She then served in the 37th Engineer Battalion (Combat, Airborne) as a platoon leader, company executive officer and assistant battalion training and air operations officer.

She studies voice with Valentin Peytchinov (Metropolitan Opera, Juilliard School of Music) and is currently pursuing her opera career after moving back to North Texas.

Lorna especially enjoys singing Russian, Italian, German, Czech, Spanish and French mezzo soprano repertoire. She has performed in a series of renowned concerts and was a semi-finalist in the New Tang Dynasty Vocal Competition in 2012. She was praised by soprano Carmela Altamura as “an important voice that we want to hear singing Verdi” at the Altamura Caruso International Vocal Competition in 2013.
