On Tuesday, March 4, a Whitesboro Middle School 7th grade English/Language Arts teacher was arrested on campus by district police after she was “deemed necessary not to drive,” according to WISD Superintendent Ryan Harper.
Although the school district was limited on what they could say, a public statement posted on Facebook by Harper stated that “all possible methods were used to limit student exposure to all processes that took place yesterday. While rumors do spread, the facts are that very few students ‘saw’ any actual activity relating to this incident.”
While the statement noted that parents of students in that teacher’s classroom were notified of an immediate change in their child’s classroom instructor, many parents said they had not received any notification. This could be due to outdated or incorrect contact information parents have filed with the district, school officials said.
“Student and staff safety and well-being, both physically and mentally, remain our top priority and Mrs. Scoggins, Mr. Sosa, and Chief Scott are to be commended for their swift, yet discrete, actions taken yesterday to ensure so,” Harper’s statement read (referencing the school’s principal, assistant principal and school resource officer).
“While this incident was unfortunate, at no time did we feel there was a viable threat placed on students and staff, only for the individual themselves,” Harper wrote.
The superintendent said that WISD will continue to make the safety of their students and staff their top priority. As of press time, the identity of the teacher had not officially been made public.
