OAKWOOD CEMETERY TO UNDERGO CHANGES

The City of Whitesboro has begun their recent plan of renovation and clean up process soon to take place at Oakwood Cemetery.

The city is quick to point out that by no means are they trying to prevent family members with loved ones buried at the cemetery from placing items on their plots.

“It just needs to be where the area can be easily mowed and weedeated,” City Secretary Brenda Goldsmith explained. “We want to keep things looking good at Oakwood Cemetery.”

S&S RAMS BAND MAKES SCHOOL HISTORY AGAIN

The S&S Rams Band made school history once again last week in the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contest held Thursday at Princeton  High School.

In that contest the band, under the direction of Robert Burke, received 1,2,2 from the judges for their prepared music. This is the first time that an S&S band has ever received a 1st division from any UIL judge.

“I am very proud of the students,” Burke said. “It is a pleasure to lead such a responsive group. They rehearse like pros day in and day out and they did a fantastic job today.”

‘VISION COMMITTEE’ TO PRESENT PRIORITIES LIST TO CITY COUNCIL

The City of Whitesboro “Vision Committee”, after recently conducting their third brainstorming session, documented priorities for presentation next week to the council.

Overall, noted Facilitator Karen Mitchell, residents supported on the necessity for improvement in the downtown area.

She said, “Everyone agreed that upgrades should be approached in a historic manner. Therefore, we discussed the Main Street Program versus other techniques to achieve community goals.”

Other items of discussion during the roundtable talk ranged from aesthetic beauty of local surrounds to the need for educational/recreational facilities.

AREA STUDENTS CLAIM PLACES AT HOWE MEET

High school students from both Whitesboro and S&S posted top three finishes at Saturday’s Howe Track Meet.

Whitesboro’s Ronnie Kemp placed first in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.02, while Kevin Bruce claimed first place in both the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14 and the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:16.

Tresta Henderson of Whitesboro placed third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:10.

Larry Smith of S&S Consolidated claimed first place in the high jump with a distance of 6-4.

The 400-meter relay team of Mandy O’Dell, Kim Reeves, Roxanne Queen, and Sherri Simpson finished in second place with a time of 53.09. The 800-meter relay team of O’Dell, Reeves, Queen and Simpson finished in second place with a time of 1:55.91.

GROUND BROKEN FOR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

Phase I of a Phase II Whitesboro housing development is now underway, following a groundbreaking last week of “Center City Addition.”

Only two blocks from downtown, Center City Addition is located between Wilson and Center streets and North Avenue and Bagin Street, diagonally across from the community swimming pool and Whitesboro Neighborhood Facility.

Developer Brian Shadden of Shadden Investments and owner of Shadden Construction, told the News-Record that Phase I of Center City Addition offers 16 lots which are currently for sale.

Ranging in size from 80 and 90 feet in width to 120 or 130 feet deep, the lots cost $7,500 and up.

Phase II of the project is hopefully expected to begin “within the next year or so” and this phase will feature another 14 to 16 lots, Shadden noted.

LOCAL ENTRIES WIN AT VALLEY VIEW SHOW

Two Whitesboro ISD students entered the winner’s circle following competition in the Valley View Invitational Livestock show held Feb. 22 and 23.

Riki Palm won with the Grand Champion entry in the Market Lamb division of the show and Joel Russell won with the Reserve Grand Champion entry in the same division of the same show.

Palm and Russell were accompanied to the competition by 20 other local students, plus vocational agricultural teachers, Joe Russell and Joe Bertino. Several parents also joined the group.

BEARCAT CAGERS IN STATE CONTEST

For the first time in Bearcat history, the high school cagers will be trying for Class A state championship honors. Members of the high school squad will face West Sabine at 1:45 p.m. Thursday in the first round of play to be held at Gregory Gymnasium, Austin.

The Bearcats won regional championship honors Saturday at Denton by defeating Midlothian in the morning bout, 48-42, and then Milsap Saturday evening, 58-50.

In the regional tourney opener, the Bearcats downed Midlothian Panthers in overtime.

JUNIOR ROTARIAN NAMED FOR MARCH

Gary McCorkle, senior student at Whitesboro high school, has been selected as Junior Rotarian for the month of March. 

McCorkle, who plays forward for the Whitesboro Bearcats, was recently named to the 16-A All-District team. He has lettered two years in basketball.

He recently was elected Mr. WHS by the student body. Also he is a reporter for the local FFA chapter.

McCorkle is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George McCorkle, Route 4, Whitesboro.
