WISD School Board 
Whitesboro ISD School Board members were honored Monday night as part of School Board Appreciation Month.
School Board members are Cynthia Wood, Superintendent Ray Lea, Dr. David Bertino, Gregg Miles, Jackie Mitchell, Curtis Clark, Jim Thomas and Greg Hickman.

A&M Commerce Honor Rolls for 2004 Fall Semester announced
Texas A&M University-Commerce has announced its President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List for the 2004 Fall Semester. 
Below are students of this area who have been named to the two honor rolls listed accordingly to their hometowns… Collinsville: President’s Honor Roll— Daniel Bates. Dean’s List— Marcus W. Davis, Katina N. Ferguson, Torrey L. Price. Whitesboro: President’s Honor Roll— Adoz J. Meals; Deans’ List— Sarah Stuckey.

Parishes observe 50th wedding anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Billy Parish were honored on Tuesday on December 30 at their daughter’s home with a family dinner in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. 

Hosts were Vicki Short, David Parrish, and Brian and Jane Parrish. 

They were married January 2, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Cumby, Texas, with the Rev. Jack Young officiating.

Five Rams named to THSCA Academic All-State football team
Five S&S Rams found homes on the recently announced Texas High School Coaches Association Class 2A Academic All-State football team for 2004-05 

These teams are selected by a point system that award points for GPA, class rank, and SAT or ACT score. 

S&S additions to the THSCA Academic All-State football team include Connor Williams, Travis Walker, Matt Rowan, Jaden Slagle and Steven Mallory.

Jan. 12, 1995

Officer commended for child’s rescue
Whitesboro Police Officer Larry W Carter was commended during Tuesday’s City Council meeting for exceptional service and bravery regarding the Christmas Eve rescue of a small child. 

“He made a split-second decision,” said Councilman W.D. Welch. “Reacting calmly to an unexpected situation that likely saved the life of a little tike. I’m just really proud that we have this caliber of an officer on our police force. To see an act like this, which might very well have been a tragedy had not Carter not been paying attention, was something special.” 

The entire episode unfolded in only 10 seconds as Carter was driving his patrol car southbound on Union Street… 

As Carter neared the area of East School Road, he observed a small boy, later learned to be two years of age, just off the roadway in the west barrow ditch…

Carter placed the child in the security of his car, transporting him to the police department where he was safely returned to his parents.

Collinsville couple entering 65th year of marriage
There’s not too many rules in the Walden household. 

In fact, one simple theory has sustained the couple through triumphs and trials right into their 65th year of marriage. At the healthy respective ages of 86 and 87, Vera and Archie Walden live to love one another. 

“No doubt about it,” Archie Walden said. “There’s got to be an everlasting dedication to get someone through this many years. It’s been just a wonderful life together. We are surely some of the luckiest people around here.”

Collinsville basketball results
The Collinsville Pirates Varsity Boys played Sam Rayburn Tuesday, Jan. 10, and won 79-70. 

Brian Childress led the Pirates with 25 points, 16 rebounds and four assists; Barry Vannoy assisted with 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists; Eric Montoya, 11 points, one rebound, six steals, four assists; Paul Covington, 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals; Hank Blair, 14 points, three rebounds, three steals, three assists; Brett McMillan, three points, two rebounds; and Todd Edgar, two points.

Jan. 10,1985

Gordonville PO Clerk retires
After serving nine years as clerk at the Gordonville Post Office, 70-year-old Ross Cleaver of Sherwood Shores has retired officially Jan. 2, 1985. 

In addition to serving the Gordonville Post Office, Cleaver served two months as officer in charge at Sadler Post Office. 

He began his duties at Gordonville in November 1977. 

“I have broken in four officers in charge and two postmasters,” said Cleaver. The postmaster, he said, postmasters, were Willene Krutzinger and the current postmaster, Darden Fletcher.

Culpepper graduates with honors
Penny Culpepper participated in graduation exercises at the University of Texas at Arlington on Dec. 22, 1984. 

She graduated with highest honors, 4.0 grade point average, receiving a bachelor’s degree in social work. 

Culpepper was also a member of Alpha Chi and Alpha Delta Mu honor societies. 

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Culpepper of Whitesboro and is a 1981 graduate of Whitesboro High School.

Student of the Week
This week’s Student of the Week is Mark Gray, 17, a senior student at S&S Sadler High School. 

He is the son of Charles and Bernice Gray of Taylor Street, Sherman. 

He also has two brothers, Mitch Gray, 22, and Mike Gray, 19, of Grayson County College, and one sister, Michelle Gray, 8, a second-grade student at Wakefield Elementary.

McLean receives degree
Mrs. Anna Gentry McLean, wife of Mike McLean, has graduated summa cum laude from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, December 15th. Mrs. McLean received her B.A. degree in education, minoring in science. Attending the graduation were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Gentry, and her husband’s Parents Mr. and Mrs. Weldon McLean.

McCauley turns two 
Lauren McCauley will celebrate her second birthday Jan. 10. She is the daughter of Mike and Margie McCauley and has a brother, Joe. 

Grandparents are Joe and Patsy McCauley and Janetta Young. 

She will be honored with a party Thursday night with family members present.

Jan. 8, 1965

Billy Hedges was named Junior Rotarian for January
Billy Hedges was introduced to the Whitesboro Rotary Club at the regular noon meeting Monday as the Junior Rotarian for the month of January. 

He is a senior at Whitesboro High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.N. Hedges of Whitesboro. 

His activities include Speech Club and Future Farmers of America. 

He is the president of the FFA chapter and recently elected FHA Beau.

Irene Hite takes position in Kenya
Irene O. Hite, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Hight, Route 1, Collinsville, was one of 39 Peace Corps volunteers on a holiday leave at home prior to leaving for Kenya on January 1. 

The volunteers will teach in secondary schools, joining a group of volunteers who arrived in Kenya three days previously to begin a rural community development project. 

These are the first Peace Corps volunteers to serve in this independent East African country.

Whitesboro Varsity Girls win against Sherman 
Whitesboro Bearkettes split a pair of cage contest with Sherman Monday night when they met on the WHS court.

Sherman took the girls opener from the B girls by a score of 41-22...

Janice Hazlewood led the scoring for the B-girls, getting 14 points. 

In the varsity game, the Bearkette’s defense, which held the Sherman girls to only three points in the first quarter, turned out to be the difference in the game…

The game ended in a 48-33 victory for the Bearkettes. Scoring in the varsity contest, was led by Tommy Riddle, who hit 24 points.
