On Jan. 1, TexomaCare of Whitesboro welcomed family medicine physician Michael Wagoner, DO, to its team. Dr. Wagoner filled the position left vacant by longtime practitioner Dr. Christopher Jones who resigned in October.
Originally from Wichita Falls, Texas, Wagoner graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and spent 10 years in the military. After his military career ended, Wagoner tried several project management and civilian jobs but didn’t find anything that truly interested him.
Wagoner had a friend who was a team doctor for groups like the Royals and the Naval Academy, and the idea excited him. He and his wife talked about their current situation and decided that Wagoner would go back to school to pursue a medical career.
He began taking classes in 2010 (his first day of school happened to be the day his oldest child was born) and he worked and attended school at night so that he could eventually apply for medical school.
After earning his medical degree from The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (and after having moved around quite a bit throughout their marriage), Wagoner and his wife wanted to settle their family in a city their kids could call home. A friend suggested they look into the Texoma area, and the family eventually moved to Celina.
In 2023, Wagoner completed his family medicine residency with Texoma Medical Center, which is owned by the same parent company as TexomaCare. They serve communities all over southern Oklahoma and north Texas. Through the residency, Wagoner met Dr. John Sissney, who told him about the job opening in Whitesboro. Sissney connected Wagoner with Dr.
Todd Kislingbury, who also works at the Whitesboro TexomaCare location.
“Dr. Todd introduced me to the community and showed us around, and really made it an easy choice,” Wagoner said about applying to Whitesboro.
The focus of Dr. Wagoner’s practice is family medicine, but TexomaCare also helps patients with weight loss, general wellness, chronic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes and overall nutrition. He sees patients ages 7 years and above.
“It’s been a really good fit,” Wagoner said of his new role at TexomaCare of Whitesboro. “We have a great staff; they’re really easy people to work with. And TexomaCare has provided a strong support group for the community. It’s great to work with people who put value on service.”
While many of Dr. Jones’ patients have remained with Dr. Wagoner, he is also accepting new patients. The clinic is open Monday through Friday with morning and afternoon appointments most days.
“If you see me in the community – at a local sporting event or out to eat – don’t hesitate to tap me on the shoulder and introduce yourself,” Wagoner said. “I’m meeting a lot of new faces and I may not remember everyone right away, but please stop and say hello.”
